2010 Featured MN County Events
All events run from May 1 - Oct. 31, 2010. The cost is $3 for IVV credit or $2 without credit.
On May 1, 2010, join us in Baxter for the County Program Kick-Off. From 7am - 1pm, there will be hot apple cider, hot chocolate, coffee and treats.
Ada (Norman County)
Host Club: Red River Volkssport Assn. (does not qualify for Looney Perks) Start Point: Cenex Convenience Store, 13 E. Thorpe Times: dawn to dusk Description: 5 & 10k. Walk through the residential and business areas of Ada, rebuilt since the flood of 1997. Baxter Walk (Crow Wing County)
Description: 5 & 10k. Walk through the beautiful Northland Arboretum with all natural trails, native tree trails, and Paul Bunyan Jack Pine Savanna. Includes a Monet garden, Potlatch Gazebo, Youth Gardens, and more. A $3 fee is recommended for the Arboretum. Bug spray is advised. Rating: 2, pets okay. Special Programs: A
Baxter Bike (Crow Wing County)
Description: 25k. Bike on the Paul Bunyan Trail starting at the Trailhead at the Northland Arboretum. Beautiful trail surrounded by prairies and woods.
The registration for these two events is at: Super 8 Motel, 14341 Edgewood Dr. (Hotel reservation number is (218) 828-4288.) Times: dawn to dusk Directions: Super 8 is located on the service road (Edgewood Dr.) along Hwy 371. From east or west on Hwy 210, go north on Hwy 371. Bagley (Clearwater County)
Start Point: Clearwater Health Services Hospital, 203 4th St NW Times: 7am to dusk Description: 5 & 10k. Walk along Lake Lomond, on city sidewalks past a golf course, cemetery, and throughout the city of Bagley. Rating: 1, pets okay. Detroit Lakes (Becker County)
Start Point: AmericInn of Detroit Lakes, 777 Hwy 10 E. Times: dawn to dusk Description: 5 & 10k. Walk through some residential areas, the downtown and along beautiful Detroit Lake. Leashed pets allowed, but clean up after them. Special Programs: F, J, R Directions: Detroit Lakes is 43 miles east of Fargo/Moorhead and 200 miles northwest of Mpls/St. Paul on Hwy 10. Mahnomen (Mahnomen County)
Host Club: Red River Volkssport Assn. (does not qualify for Looney Perks) Start Point: Red Apple Cafe, 116 Main St. NE This is in the middle of the business district. Times: 6am to 8pm Description: 5 & 10k. Walk business and residential areas, including passing by the Shooting Star Casino and to a nearby cemetery. The start point has the most wonderful pie and great home-town cooking. Rating: 1, pets okay. Moorhead (Clay County)
Host Club: Red River Volkssport Assn. (does not qualify for Looney Perks) Registration: Howard Johnson Inn, 301 3rd Ave N, Fargo, ND Times: dawn to dusk Description: 5 & 10k. You will register in Fargo and drive to the start point in Moorhead, MN at the Hjemkomst Center. The walk will go past historic churches, a firehouse, through a cemetery, past museums, and along the Red River of the North. Note: Check with POC on status of trails if walking early in the spring. Flooding has occurred in this area. Rating: 1, pets okay. Directions: From I-94, take 2nd St. N exit in Fargo. Go north. Park Rapids Walk (Hubbard County)
Description: 5 & 10k. Walk through downtown Park Rapids with it's unique shops, some residential and on the Heartland Trail. Special Programs: K, M, T
Park Rapids Bike (Hubbard County)
Description: 25k. Ride the beautiful Heartland Trail past the small town of Dorset (Restaurant Capital of the World). You will drive from the registration point to the trailhead, which is approx. 1 1/2 miles. Directions will be in the start box.
The registration for both of these events is at: Schwarzwald Inn/Restaurant, 122 Main Ave. The start box is located inside the restaurant in the front. Ask at the hostess stand. Times: dawn to dusk Rating: 1, pets okay. Directions: From Hwy 71 north or south, go west on Hwy 34 (also known as 1st St W) 1 block to Main Ave. Turn south and go one block. Route passes highlights of this resort town and beach along Leech Lake. Includes segments of both the Heartland and the Paul Bunyan State Recreational Trails. Rating: 1, pets okay. Special Programs: A, C, D, F, K, L, M, N, R, V Directions: From Mpls/St. Paul, follow US Hwy 10 west to MN Hwy 371 N. At MN Hwy 200, turn left to Walker.
